What do you do when you make a mistake?

Lets face it. We are only human and despite our best intentions, our most avid concentration and no matter how many times we have done the same thing before. We still make mistakes. However because we are only human there is a tendency for all of us to do the same thing when we make a mistake. We try to cover it up.

There are several ways we try to cover up our mistakes. Plead dumb or ignorance, "Gee I didn't know it could do that". Blame it on someone else, "If Harry hadn't met Sally then we wouldn't be in this mess". Sweep it under the proverbial rug and hope no one finds out about it. Finally what we all hope for is to be able to fix our mistakes without anyone finding out about it "Yes boss the restore from backup went smoothly".

Those courses of action, no matter how tempting, are not always the best way to act. You may never get caught, the other dumb schmuck might get fired instead of you but eventually that strategy will backfire and bite you in the nether regions. You will get a reputation, you will lose credibility and your career advancement will be crippled.

Although anyone can make mistakes not anyone can own up to them. Those that do own up to their mistakes can gain a lot of respect and credibility just from having the courage to speak up and if they report the mistakes before someone else finds out. That is provided you also have a plan of action to reverse or alleviate the effects of the mistake. If you don't have enough knowledge to do so then providing enough timely information to the people who can fix your mistakes will make them more willing to clean up your mess. Wanting to learn how not to make the same mistake again is also a big plus.

So what do you do when you make a mistake? Suck it up, fess up, fix it or find out how and move on.what do you think folks?

the best way is to fix-up your mistakes, anyway, people will forget it in due time! but better not leave it undone.
