Why Insurance is Important to OFW?
We, OFWs tend to focus ourselves in work, how to gain money and earnings, how to raise well our family in the Philippines, that's great; however, we tend to forget ourselves, we tent to forget how to secure ourselves. Securing ourselves does not mean that we only focus on the our own future, but we are also preparing our loved ones' future...
That's why, insurance is also an immediate and important aspect to us.
* insurance prepares ourselves in the future, in terms of pension and other services
* it provides health benefits and disability claims
* it provides good future for our children, in terms of education & others
Insuring ourselves does not mean we splurge big amount of our earnings. There are some government agencies that we can rely on, like SSS, GSIS and PhilHealth.
In case of illness, disability, operations, and other similar accidents, if we are an SSS and PhilHealth Active Member, we can claim "sickness benefits", and others...
How can we claim "sickness benefits" in SSS & PhilHealth if we are working abroad? Here's how:
* first, you must be an active member of the agencies, meaning you regularly pays your contribution;
*if you are one, then something unfortunate happens to you while you're an OFW (e.g, sever illness that confined you to the hospital, operation/surgery, accident and other similar misfortune), you may request your wife, husband, parents or your authorized relatives/friend to secure a sickness benefit form from the agency,
* send the form to you, then you fill-it up with necessary information, signed by your attending physician, attach with hospital bills, certificate of operation and/or confinement, clinical abstract, medicine receipts, etc., - these should be certified true copy duly signed by the hospital and attending physician, and the Philippine Embassy.
* then, you send those documents to the Philippines addressed to your authorized person to process it (e.g, wife, relative/friend), with authorization letter authorizing him/her to file and process the documents
*your authorized person shall file/submit those documents to the agency, the agency will process your documents and will send you the check as sickness benefit. the check is under your name, and it is advisable to use Philippine Address to make it easier to facilitate.
*the amount of your check will depend on the amount and length of your contribution.
* for encashment of check, you can send authorization letter to bank who you authorize to encash it...
* so, it's a big help not only to you but to your family and loved ones as well..
if you underwent operation/surgery, then after six months from the date of your operation, there is manifestations of disability occur, (e.g,, you got blind due to operation, or anything that will result for you not to work), then, you can claim for "disability benefits" wherein the agency will give you pension - the amount again will depend on the amount and length of your contribution, still, a big help to you and to your family...
In case of death/bereavement, definitely your family will receive financial assistance that will ease the finances.... and your beneficiaries will receive pension that might be of great help to their lives...
When you get old, definitely you will receive pension that will help you in your life, you will not be dependent to your family/loved ones since you will still be receiving ample amount to sustain your daily needs...
So, there is nothing wrong if we secure ourselves, as this not only securing ours, but also our family members and our loved ones....
Mabuhay, All OFWs!

Re: Why Insurance is Important to OFW?
unfortunately, there is no system for SSS wherein payment can be done through internet, nevertheless, you can still pay your contribution through your relatives, or your wife or family member, you can ask a favor from them to facilitate your sss payment. you can pay monthly, quarterly or annually, depends on your choice...
