Former Agriculture and Forestry Minister Im Sang-gyu, 62, is reported to have committed suicide in connection with bribe scandal involving the right to restaurant services at construction sites.

He was found dead in his car in front of his family tomb site in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, early Monday morning.

He has been in trouble as he has been reported to have been involved in the scandal, according to his family members.

Im, currently president of Sunchon National University in the province, has been banned from traveling overseas in this connection by the prosecution since June 3.

The prosecution said Im has been suspected to take 20 million won on two occasions from construction site restaurant broker Yu Sang-bong, 65, when the latter asked the former to introduce the provincial governor and other local public officials so that he could win the right to operate restaurants at large construction sites in North Gyeongsang Province.

The prosecutors also confirmed that 150 million won were put into the account of Im’s brother on two occasions one in 2005 and the other in 2007 from Yu, who has been out on bail. They are investigating whether or not the money is bribe.

Yu is reported to have confessed to prosecutors that he handed out as much as 4 billion won to the university head.

Im served as the agriculture and forestry minister from August 2007 to February 2008 under the President Roh Moo-hyun government. He has served as the president university since July 2010.
