NUMBER OF JOB VACANCIES

There were 120,000 job vacancies at the end of December 2010, resulting in a
0.9% job vacancy rate. The number of job vacancies fell 64,000 or 34.7%
from 184,000 a year earlier, and the job vacancy rate fell 0.5%p from
1.4% a year earlier.

* Job vacancies : jobs currently unfilled but can be filled within one month
* Job vacancy rate : a ratio of the number of job vacancies to the sum of employees and job vacancies

The number of jobless people for every job vacancy (no. of jobless
people/no. of job vacancies) was 6.9, an increase of 2.4 from 4.5 people
a year earlier.

By employment status, the number of job vacancies and the job vacancy rate
both for permanent positions and temporary and daily positions declined
year-on-year in December 2010.

The number of unfilled permanent positions and its corresponding vacancy
rate dropped 29.4% and 0.4%p to 99,000 and 0.9%, respectively, from
140,000 and 1.3% a year ago.

The number of unfilled temporary and daily positions and its corresponding
vacancy rate went down 51.7% and 1.0%p to 21,000 and 1.2%, respectively,
from 44,000 and 2.2% a year earlier.

By industry, the number of job vacancies decreased year-on-year in all
industries. The job vacancy rate also fell year-on-year in nearly all
industries, except for electricity, gas, steam and water supply and
membership organizations, repair and other personal services where the
rate remained unchanged.

LABOR MOBILITY

The overall accession rate in December 2010 stood at 3.5%, up 0.4%p from
3.1% a year ago and the overall separation rate was 3.9%, down 0.2%p
from 4.1% a year ago.

The number of workers voluntarily leaving their jobs was 276,000, an
increase of 16,000 or 6.2% from 260,000 a year ago while the number of
those involuntarily leaving their jobs was 196,000, a decrease of 40,000
or 17.0% from 236,000 a year ago.

The accession rate for regular employees was 2.1%, the same as a year ago,
and the separation rate for them was 2.1%, down 0.2%p from 2.3% a year
ago.

The accession rate for temporary and daily employees was 12.1%, up 3.4%p
from 8.7% a year ago, and the separation rate for them was 15.3%, up
1.9%p from 13.5%.

IMPLICATIONS

The number of workers in establishments, which indicates the number of
jobs, increased year-on-year for the seventh consecutive month since the
first employment trends survey was conducted. A growing number of
workers voluntarily left their jobs in anticipation of an employment
recovery.

Labor mobility (both accession and separation) remained relatively high
mainly in manufacturing, construction, and wholesale and retail trade.
Trends often found during economic and employment recovery continued,
such as increasing numbers of newly employed people and voluntary job
leavers.
