More Hostility by N. Korea Expected Next Year"
Amid looming anxiety over future provocations by North Korea, a Seoul-based state-run think tank said that Pyeongyang is likely to continue with its hostile acts towards the South next year citing a possible military strike on islands in the West Sea.
The Institute for National Security Strategy, run by the National Intelligence Service, reported that there is a strong probability that the communist nation could increase its special forces and develop new military strategies against the South as the regime goes through a power transition from current leader Kim Jong-il to his third son, Kim Jong-un.
And it predicted that North Korean military leaders are likely to make unexpected moves to display its loyalty to the heir-apparent.
The INSS warned that the assaults could be aimed at a submarine, airplane or ship and also mentioned a possible terrorist act on defectors living in South Korea and the infiltration of front-line observation posts.
The institute added that North Korea is showing signs of a third nuclear test and that it seems technically prepared to go ahead with the test at any time.
In respect to the long-stalled six-party nuclear talks, the INSS speculated that if the North is to propose a drastic concession and give in to demands there will be a significant breakthrough in the process of resuming the multilateral dialogue.
However, the report pointed out that it would be difficult to expect much progress in denuclearizing the Korean peninsula via the talks due to a clash in opinions regarding the North's abandonment of nuclear weapons between Washington and Pyeongyang.
