158,000 job vacancies remain unfilled in Oct. 2010
FYI lng po..
I hope this would b a good indication to all EPS aspirants (boys & girls and or/ 6th & 7th KLT passers).. This would hopefully have a DOMINO effect in the later years..
The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) has released the provisional results of its employment trends survey covering establishments with one worker or more.
According to the results, there were 13,766,000 workers in October 2010, up 92,000 or 0.7% from 13,674,000 a year earlier.
* Year-on-year changes: 0.9% in Jul. 2010 → 1.0% in Aug. 2010 → 0.5% in Sept. 2010 → 0.7% in Oct. 2010
The figures are provisional estimates based on the 2008 employment trends survey. Confirmed figures based on the 2009 survey will be available at the end of this year.
By employment status, the numbers of regular employees and other workers rose while the number of temporary and daily employees fell.
The number of regular employees stood at 11,177,000, up 347,000 or 3.2% from 10,830,000 a year earlier.
The number of temporary and daily employees was 1,863,000, down 275,000 or 12.9% from 2,138,000 a year earlier.
The number of others was 726,000, up 20,000 or 2.8% from 706,000 a year earlier.
* Others : those who are paid only sales commissions based on their performance in sales or service charges without getting fixed remuneration, and those who work unpaid to acquire the skills required for work.
Compared with the same month last year, the number of workers increased in manufacturing (92,000), construction (91,000) and business facilities management (71,000) and declined in accommodation and food services (-66,000), public administration (-34,000), financial services (-28,000) and education (-21,000).
Business facilities management (10.8%) and construction (9.4%) showed a relatively large increase from a year earlier while accommodation and food services (-8.2%), financial services (-4.2%) and sewage disposal (-4.1%) showed a relatively large decrease from a year earlier.
There were 158,000 job vacancies at the end of October 2010, resulting in a 1.2% job vacancy rate.
The number of job vacancies fell 9,000 or 5.5% from 167,000 a year earlier, and the job vacancy rate fell 0.1%p from 1.3% a year earlier.
* Job vacancies : jobs currently unfilled but can be filled within one month
* Job vacancy rate : a ratio of the number of job vacancies to the sum of employed people and job vacancies
The number of jobless people for every job vacancy (no. of jobless people/no. of job vacancies) was 5.1, an increase of 0.5 from 4.7 people a year earlier.
* The number of jobless people per vacancy falls when there is either an increase in the number of job vacancies or a decrease in the number of jobless people as a result of economic recovery. It rises when the case is reversed.
By employment status, the number of unfilled permanent positions slightly
increased compared with the same month last year, and its corresponding vacancy rate remained the same as last year. The number of unfilled temporary and daily positions and its corresponding vacancy rate both showed a decrease over the same month last year.
The number of unfilled permanent positions amounted to 127,000, up 1.9% from 125,000 a year earlier. The job vacancy rate for such positions was 1.1%, unchanged from the same month a year earlier.
The number of unfilled temporary and daily positions was 31,000, down 27.5% from 42,000 a year ago and the corresponding vacancy rate was 1.6%, down 0.3%p from 1.9% a year ago.
By industry, the number of job vacancies declined year-on-year in nearly all industries, except for manufacturing (up 3,987), wholesale and retail trade (up 1,775), and membership organizations (up 1,415).
Job vacancy rates also fell year-on-year in almost all industries, except for membership organizations (up 0.4%p), wholesale and retail trade (up 0.2%p) and manufacturing (up 0.1%).
The overall accession rate in October 2010 stood at 4.1%, up 0.8%p from 3.2 a year ago and the overall separation rate was 3.4%, up 0.1%p from 3.3% a year ago.
The number of workers voluntarily leaving their jobs rose to 326,000, an increase of 28,000 or 9.2% from 298,000 a year ago while the number of those involuntarily leaving their jobs fell to 82,000, a decrease of 24,000 or 22.2% from 106,000 a year ago.
The accession rate for regular employees was 2.5%, up 0.4%p from 2.2% a year ago, and the separation rate for them was 2.5%, up 0.4%p from 2.1% a year ago.
The accession rate for temporary and daily employees was 13.1%, up 4.6%p from 8.6% a year ago, and the separation rate for them was 9.2%, down 0.4%p from 9.6%.
The number of workers in establishments, which indicates the number of jobs, has increased year-on-year for five straight months since its first survey conducted. There was also a growing number of workers voluntarily leaving their jobs in anticipation of an employment recovery.
Although there was a constant demand for labor, especially in manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food services, the growth in the number of job vacancies and job vacancy rate slowed down.
The slow increase can be explained by weakening economic indicators, both leading and coincident, and seasonal factors.
Amid the overall economic recovery employment recovery continued to proceed, leading to an increase in job creation and labor mobility.
