No ban to South Korea - DOLE

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) today clarified that the government has not banned the deployment of Filipino workers to South Korea despite prevailing hostilities there.

In a statement, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the government merely deferred the departure of 55 Korea-bound Filipino workers but has not issued any deployment ban.

“There is no order to suspend temporarily the deployment of overseas Filipino workers to South Korea, as Radyo ng Bayan first reported and picked up later by other news organizations,” Baldoz said.

Baldoz explained that the government delayed until Dec. 7 the scheduled Nov. 30 departure of 55 Filipinos to South Korea pending the assessment of the peace and order situation in Korea.

She stressed that President Aquino only instructed Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo to assess the situation in Korea and come out with a recommendation “as a matter of caution and prudence.”

“Any further decision on the deployment of OFWs to South Korea will be reviewed after the team of Ambassador Roy Cimatu, which has been ordered to go to South Korea to assess the situation there, has submitted a report,” Baldoz noted.

Earlier, Baldoz said the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration is continuously processing the overseas employment contracts of Korea-bound workers despite call to temporarily suspend the sending of workers there.

Baldoz said there is no need to impose a ban at this time because the prevailing tension in Korea is “isolated” in certain areas. - By Mayen Jaymalin (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)
