Manpower needed by korean government was increase
10,000 foreign workers will be additionally brought into Korea
The government held on July 30 the Foreign Manpower Policy Committee (chaired by the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office) meeting and decided to increase the number of foreign workers to be newly brought into Korea this year by 10,000 from the originally planned 24,000 to 34,000, which stands similar to last year’s.
This decision came as an extension of support measures for small and mid-sized companies that have been undergoing the shortage of labor with the caps for foreign workforce quotas already met due to the rapidly recovering economy.
The government initially announced on March 31 that it would bring in 24,000 new foreign workers this year, taking into account the fact that the economy was steadily picking up from around the end of last year but the local job market had yet to bounce back.
However, the economy has been making progress faster than expected with the second-quarter growth reaching as high as 7.2 percent (which had been projected at 5 percent in March), and smaller companies’ demand for workforce turned out to be outpacing supply. The job vacancy rate during the first half of this year stood at 3.3 percent (or 285,000 workers), a 0.7 percentage point rise from the same period last year.
Most of the 24,000 foreign workers initially announced to be brought in this year are already hired. The application period for the quotas opened on April 2, and the cap for the agricultural and livestock industry (2,000 workers) was reached on the same day, the cap for the fishing industry (800 workers) on April 9, and the cap for the first-half quota of the manufacturing industry (13,500 workers) on May 3. The application for the third-quarter quota of the manufacturing industry (3,000 workers) was closed on July 2, just two days after the application period opened.
Currently, only the fourth-quarter quota for the manufacturing industry (3,000 workers) and part of the quotas for the construction and service industries remain available for application.
The government decided to receive applications for the fourth-quarter quota for the manufacturing industry earlier than scheduled. Furthermore, the 10,000 foreign workers additionally brought in will be granted the E-9 visa given to general foreign workforce. Among them, 8,600 will be allocated to the manufacturing industry hit the hardest by manpower shortage, and the rest allocated to the agricultural and livestock industry (1,100) and the fishing industry (300), all of which had reached their caps within days of the application period.
Director General of Manpower Policy said, “We expect this decision to contribute to resolving the shortage of labor for small and mid-sized companies. We plan to further promote the collaboration between large companies and smaller companies and the improvement of employment conditions of smaller companies for local job seekers, while providing a comprehensive range of measures to capitalize upon different groups of foreign workers including skilled workers capable of exerting substantial economic impact as well as non-skilled workers and the rapidly increasing married immigrants.” [b]

Re: Manpower needed by korean government was increase
@barasiferds as ai know we are given a qouta by the korean government which is 5000 workers to be hired in our country before the EPS-KLT was conducted, so 2755 is not enough to fill up the qouta, so we hope all the 6th klt passer will be given a chance.thank you
