Good news for EPS workers next year! Minimum wage for 2011 up by 5.1% rising to 4,320 won per hour...
Public interest members’ proposal was voted to be adopted at the Minimum Wage Commission on July 3. The rate will be officially announced and confirmed by August 5, 2010.
The minimum wage for 2011, which will start to apply from January 1st, 2011, is set at 4,320 won per hour, 5.1% increase from this year.
The Minimum Wage Commission held a marathon meeting from 8 pm on July 2 to early hours of July 3 but couldn’t reach an agreement. So, a proposal by the public interest members was voted to decide the 2011 minimum wage at 4,320 won. This is 210 won increase from this year to 4,110 won per hour. It translates into 34,560 won per day (working 8 hours per day) and 902,880 won per month for workers working 40 hours per week (working 209 hours per month) and 976,320 won for workers working 44 hours per week (working 226 hours per month).
Regarding the negotiations over minimum wage, the labor circle represented by the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) and Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) held a joint press conference with civic groups including religious and women groups and demanded 26% raise or 5,180 won as minimum wage for next year. The figure is to reflect compensation for concessionary negotiations done by the labor circle and expectation for economic recovery.
On the contrary, resisting to precocious optimism for an earnest economic recovery, the management side insisted on the freeze of minimum wage citing cost burden for SMEs and employment insecurity for the underprivileged the minimum wage can cause. The labor and management held a series of negotiations to narrow down the gap but couldn’t produce any deal by the legal deadline June 29 while the management sticking to 4,140 won or 0.7% raise and the labor to 5,000 won or 21.6% raise. They also failed to reach an agreement at the plenary meeting which extended till the morning of July 3 and the voting for the proposal by the public interest members was processed. There has been a bigger difference between the labor and management than any other time as shown by the fact that all the representatives from the employer side walked out of the meeting before the voting.
The FKTU and KCTU sent a united voice at the negotiation of the minimum wage demanding that the minimum wage in 2011 must make up at least half the average wage of all the workers taking into account economic growth and inflation. There has been a strong demand for the minimum wage raise from many directions: the Youth Union, first kind of generational union, urged an increase of minimum wage saying, “the most imminent thing to do for the government is to raise the minimum wage.” In addition, women groups including Korean Women’s Trade Union and Workers’ Union and Korean Women Workers Association, etc. also demanded a raise in tandem with price rises to ameliorate deteriorating women’s employment situations.
On the other hand, as the minimum wage for 2011 was concluded at the Minimum Wage Commission, the Minister of Employment and Labor will officially announce the rate and go through a period of protest. The rate will be confirmed by August 5, 2010.

Re: Good news for EPS workers next year! Minimum wage for 2011 up by 5.1% rising to 4,320 won per hour...
@ maykel mike,
agree! Korean labor law as well as its immigration law are very good compare to other countries esp. the Philippines... it's very fair to foriegn workers... i've studied them since I came in Korea that's why i can attest to those whoever disagree my comment... and for me, as foreign worker, it's a shame to critic negatively the Korean government...
but offcourse, there is no perfect country in this world... so despite of the very fair and good labor laws in Korea, still Korea need more improvements on its implementation because many of the Korean employers did not follow some of the provisions of the law... Korean government should improve its labor office assistance and resolution effectively on all foreign workers' petitions against abusive employers which clearly violated the labor laws...
@ ms. tatum,
dave nalang tawag mo sa akin... baka mapagkamalan pa akong dave gandang hari...

be patient lang kabayan... magdedepende po kasi sa hiring employers ang papasok sa Korea... and we have also to consider na meron din maraming KLT passers from other sending countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, etc... depende po kasi sa hiring employers kung anong nationality ang gusto nilang ihahire... but don't worry, hindi po talunan ang pinoy pagdating sa quality ng pagtatrabaho dito sa Korea kaya im sure priority pa rin ng mga employers to hire KLT passers from Phil.
at pray din natin na yung EPS (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on) na malapit na matatapos ang sojourn period nila, kunti lang ang mag-tnt kasi if majority po sa kanila ang mag-tnt, im sure makaka-affect po yan sa hiring ng mga new KLT passers...
thanks...

thanks sa info...gud news nga po yan para sa mga eps workers, ask ko lang panu kung fix rate ka possible bang ma increasan ka din,,
kabayang thevred,
if naka fix rate ka per month, you should divide it according to how many hours po kayong nagwowork sa isang buwan... separate your regular worked hours from the overtime worked hours... then you will know kung tama ba ang total fix rate mo sa current minimum wage na 4,110won per hour...
in case yung sahod mo is malaki pa sa minimum wage, depende na po yan sa employer nyo kung may increase kayo...
the bottom line, your hourly salary must not be lower than the current minimum wage...
by the way, try to use this daily overtime auto-monitoring sheet I created for EPS workers... i hope it will help you...

if naka fix rate ka per month, you should divide it according to how many hours po kayong nagwowork sa isang buwan... separate your regular worked hours from the overtime worked hours... then you will know kung tama ba ang total fix rate mo sa current minimum wage na 4,110won per hour...
in case yung sahod mo is malaki pa sa minimum wage, depende na po yan sa employer nyo kung may increase kayo...
the bottom line, your hourly salary must not be lower than the current minimum wage...
by the way, try to use this daily overtime auto-monitoring sheet I created for EPS workers... i hope it will help you...

thanks...
