Migrant Workers Suffer From Long Hours, Low Wages and Accidents
Migrant Workers Suffer From Long Hours, Low Wages and Accidents Kyungnam Center for Migrant Workers, "No Difference After EPS"
Migrant workers still suffer from long working hours, low wages, and dangers of industrial accidents.
The Kyungnam Center for Migrant Workers said that they found this in a survey for 400 migrant workers in 300 companies in South Kyungsang Province.
The Center reported that most of the migrant workers worked more than 8 hours a day: 47% (188) of the surveyed worked an average of 11-12 hours a day, 20% (79) worked 9-10 hours, and 17% (69) worked 7-8 hours.
Nevertheless, migrant workers still suffer from low wage system. The survey found an average monthly salary was 1,327,900 Won which included overtime allowances for long working hours. Therefore, the returns for migrant workers are minimum wages.
Interesting finding of the survey was that the average wage for un-registered migrant workers was higher than that of registered migrant workers. Registered migrant workers' average wage was 1,273,700 Won (161) while that of unregistered migrant workers was 1,406,000 Won (111).
The finding can also be explained that companies need experienced migrant workers who can increase productivities. However, it is clear that the current short-cycle of 3-5 years of EPS cannot meet the demands of the companies.
However, since the current wage system of EPS cannot guarantee any wage increase according to their work years and experiences, only an epochal change in the policy direction on the part of the government could bring an escape for migrant workers under the bridle of low wages.
The Center also reported that the realities regarding industrial accidents and health and safety education were seriously poor.
The high percentage of 33%, 3 out of 10 workers, reported that they have experienced industrial accidents, and 16% of them said they paid for their medical treatments for the accidents.
The Kyungnam Center for Migrant Workers said that the results are the barometers for the poor labor environments for migrant workers, and that the results also show that the required safety educations for companies with high accident elements have not been provided.
The Kyungnam Center for Migrant Workers said "While the Korean government has changed its foreign labor policy into EPS, the poor wage system of long hours and low wages in the manufacturing industry has not been changed." The center asserted, "As long as the government is busy with low wage strategy of marginal firms which create low added-values, the infringements on labor and human rights of migrant workers are inevitable."

Re: Migrant Workers Suffer From Long Hours, Low Wages and Accidents
AKO NGA HINAHANAP KO SIYA E SA WALA TALAGANG WORK SA LABOR NUNG Na RELEASE SIYA Eh ,WALaNG TRABAHO PARA SA BABAE dat tym..
sana man lang kumilos ang gobyerno natin na i extend during recession ung 2 months di puba???
Iba pa ung nagtrabaho ng 13 -14 to 15 hours a day -ung walang night differential (den tanungin nyo magkanu sinasahod) dinadaya ang sahod(cheater company ang tawag dun)
