This was announced by Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda D. Baldoz after receiving a report from Philippine Labor Attache to South Korea Felicitas Bay, who said that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) working in Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS) are covered by the prospective minimum wage increase.

“OFWs in South Korea under the EPS are covered by the hourly wage hike in parity with the native Korean workforce, based on the non-discriminatory provisions of Korea’s labor and employment standards and laws,” Secretary Baldoz said, adding:

“The Minimum Wages Act of South Korea applies without discrimination for the benefit of both the native Korean, as well as foreign workers employed in South Korea.”

The labor and employment chief emphasized that the application of wage increase is a welcome development because this is in harmony with the goal of President Benigno S. Aquino III, under his 22-point agenda on labor and employment, to bolster the welfare and protection of the Philippines’s modern day heroes and to ensure the constitutional rights of workers.

“The maintenance of optimum labor standards, such as the minimum wage, that benefit our workers overseas constitutes a fair ground towards sustained and vibrant bilateral labor relations between the Philippines and the countries that host Filipino workers,” she said.
