RP, Korea Ink Academic Accord
By Prof. Luz Suplico

Seoul, South Korea—To promote academic cooperation, West Visayas State University (WVSU) in Ilo-ilo, Philippines and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) in Seoul, South Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last May 28.

WVSU Vice-President Dr. Ramon Zarceno together with Director of Planning and Development Dr. Bobby Gerardo and Language Center Director Sharon Quimpo signed the MOU with HUFS President Park Chul together with Vice-Pres. Dr. Myoung Ho Lee, Vice-Pres. for External Affairs and Development Dr. In Chul Km, Dean of Academic Affairs at Seoul Campus Dr. Gang Woong Lee and Director of Public Relations Dr. Jeong Hwan Shin and Dr. Luz Suplico, a HUFS Marketing professor.

Philippine Ambassador Luis Cruz witnessed the MOU signing which specify student and faculty exchanges in the field of academic excellence together with Consul Juan Dayang and Cultural Attaché Mylo Fausto.

According to Amb. Cruz, this agreement is very crucial as there were 111,000 Korean who came to the Philippines in 2007 to study the English language.

Also, he expects the number of Korean students to grow with the opening of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN-Korea Center in August 2008 in Seoul. “If there’s a student who wants to study in the Philippines, the student can either visit the Philippine Embassy or the ASEAN-Korea Center,” Amb. Cruz added.

According to reports, South Korea tops the number of tourists, investors, and foreign students for English language study in the Philippines which displaced the US and Japan.

The MOU signing is part of HUFS initiatives to become a global university and has agreement with 194 universities in 63 countries. Also, it is known for its graduates who became Korea’s diplomats. Meanwhile, WVSU is known for its Language Center which has been a top choice of Korean students who study outside Manila.
