OFW LIFE’ SCENARIO… REAL OR REEL?
The following blog written in one way or another is factual stories happening to some OFWs not only here in Korea but also in some countries, not only to Filipinos but also to some races as well, whose ultimate goal is to provide the best for their families. I did not intend to pinpoint certain life or situation of a particular person because this is a general picture, sometimes a reality, but sometimes only a reel (haka-haka). It’s up to you how you will understand the stories or scenarios.
Scenario 1:
Juan and Juana were living a simple life in the province. They have two adorable kids. But because of their urge to realize their dreams of owning a house, managing their own business, send their kids to private schools, eat sumptuous foods everyday, etc., Juan applied for a seaman’s work. Besides, it is his degree. Luckily, he was hired and off to his dreams. Juana was left in the province to manage their kids and her husband’s earnings. The first remittance was send to Juana after one month, it was indeed P50,000.00! Juana was so excited having that big amount in her hands. They immediately went to the mall in nearby city and splurged the amount. One week after, she has no single money in her hands, but she was not worried as she expected that three more weeks to go, another P50,000.00 will arrive. She cannot help herself but get excited whenever this amount tingles in her mind. Little did she notice, every time her husband sends out the remittance, she will splurge it easily, bought the latest mobile phones, clothes, shoes, etc., you can find her almost everyday eating in fast foods and restaurants in nearby city. And every time her husband took a vacation, they always quarrel because Juana has no savings in the bank even a single money. She is already addicted to bar hopping, discos, shopping and mall hopping, among others. Her husband bought a land where they can build their dream house and told Juana to pay it monthly through his remittance. However, Juana did not able to pay the land because she already spent the money in other things. When her husband decided to move into a rented house, they don’t have even a simple TV set, nor a dining set. It was indeed a horrible scenario. How come Juana cannot able to buy even a simple TV set, if she regularly receives P50,000.00 a month? What do you think is the next scenario? If this happened to you, how will you deal with it?
Scenario 2:
Pedro is working almost 24/7 in one of the most developed countries in Asia. He regularly sends money to his family left in the Philippines. Besides his wife have also many plans for them especially on his earnings. He really loves his wife and trusted her so much because of many plans she shared to him. His wife will put up a piggery business in their place so he needs to send more money for it. Their children are studying in the most expensive school in their place so they need to be supported financially. According to his wife, two more years and he can now retire from his work, he will be his own boss in their business, and they will be one of the rich families in their place. He is so proud of his wife. One day, Pedro received a call from his mother. He wondered, why his mother calling him in the middle of the night? He immediately answered the call. He was shocked with the news he received, his wife eloped with his man/boyfriend (kabit). According to his mother, all the stories his wife was kept on telling him were all lies. They don’t have piggery business anymore as it was bankrupt six months ago already, their children are not studying in private school, instead in public school and his children are already living with his mother and do not receive any support from him since his wife is keeping all the remittances to herself because he is living with another man. Pedro went home to know the truth, and his entire mother’s story was true. He cannot find his wife anymore. What can you say about this?
Scenario 3:
Fredo is working as OFW for almost six years. His wife in the Philippines simply and contentedly manages the monthly remittance of his husband. However, the remittance is not stable because according to Fredo, he sometimes lost his job and look for another. Freda understands it as her husband already sacrifices a lot. She needs to tighten her belt and manage the budget as well. But, how can she manage the 3,000.00 – 5,000.00 remittance monthly if she has six children to feed? They all go to school? She has no work since her husband does not want her to work so she can only focus to their children. From 3,000.00 – 5,000.00 monthly remittance, it went down to 2,000.00 until there is no single remittance anymore. She has no communication with her husband for so long. She is really worried with her husband’s situation. One day, she received news from a woman, the woman told her not to expect anything from her husband anymore because they are living together. They will build a new family in that place. Freda was shocked, she tried to communicate to her husband to confirm the news, and it was indeed true! What’s next?
Scenario 4:
It is almost two years since Ange works as an OFW. She is married in the Philippines and has two kids left. She always misses her family and to subside her feelings, she tried to divert her attention to her work, and mingle with her co-OFWs. She manages to have more friends as days go by. One day, Ange met Dido in one of her night-out gimiks. They got attracted to each other and had a whirlwind romance. She got pregnant and gave birth without the knowledge of her husband who is left in the Philippines. Because of the situation, Ange gave her child to childless couple and keep the secret to herself. Now that she will go home to the Philippines, how can she explain the evidence to her body (stitches) that she underwent C-section operation? (she had normal birth delivery way back in the Philippines). How you will respond to this situation?
There are lot more stories of OFWs. These are just few of them. I tried to write these scenarios and share to my fellow readers for us to assess our lives. Are we ready with the unexpected effects or consequences of what we are saying,” our sacrifices”? Who should be blamed of in this kind of situations? Are we ready to make a difference or should we also adopt these situations making an excuse that we are the OFW, we are the ones sacrificing more? How about our children, our ultimate sufferers? My fellow readers, this is a point of reflection….

Re: OFW LIFE’ SCENARIO… REAL OR REEL?
