Sprinkler system at the rooftop

Immigration offices nationwide have made significant progress in improving their facilities for foreigners held for special examination.

The detention facility for foreign workers who have overstayed their visas has gone through a new facelift. The floors, which had been made of highly inflammable urethane, have been replaced with safer flooring material and other furnishings have been replaced with fireproof materials. Sprinklers were installed in the ceiling and ventilators on the wall.

The improvement came after the unfortunate fire at Yeosu Immigration Office in Jeollanam-do (South Jeolla Province) last year, which killed 10 and injured 17 of the foreign nationals who were detained in the center for examination of their visa status. Last Sunday marked the 1st anniversary of the tragic blaze at Yeosu office.

Other safety measures newly added to the detention facilities include regular safety drills to practice extinguishing fires and establishing systematic order within the place to better respond to emergencies. The Ministry of Justice revealed the improvements were made with heartfelt condolences to the fire victims and the survivors suffering the aftereffects.

“We plan to make more improvements as soon as we secure the budget,” Justice Department official said.

Among the victims who survived last year’s fire are 14 Chinese citizens receiving treatment for trauma. The government has decided to pay their medical bills. Three other survivors who left the country at the time didn’t return for personal reasons.

Improved ventilation equipment

Manuals for disaster management will be complemented by providing customized instruction for each institution and facility and hold regular education to remind everyone concerned of the risks.

There will be joint exercises with local fire stations twice a year and individual fire training once a month.

Yeosu detention center went through a massive facelift to replace all inflammable materials with fireproof ones and sprinklers. The three detention rooms were remodeled into an auditorium to be used as a place to hold religious functions and cultural classes for detainees.
